I believe that noise is likely the warning to other deer in the area. What you do hear is a 'bong, bong, bong' as they po-go jump away from you their hooves hitting the ground at the same time which makes a distinct noise that you immediately associate with the mule deer. They and jump keep running as usually the predators out west just keep after them. The difference is a whitetail when startled, will jump two or three times and often stop and blow whereas a mule deer when startled doesn't have the same propensity to suddenly stop. We would recommend you not use this call on younger bucks.Based on my many hunts for them, I would say that they don't blow.at least I can't remember any doing that.
